Types of Burns and ER Treatment

Most of us have had a burn of some kind before, but not everyone knows that there are different types of burns, and some of them can be serious and require treatment from an emergency care center or 24-hour ER.

Types of Burns

People can get three types of burns; depending on the severity, you may need a freestanding ER to get treatment.

The most common type of burn is a heat-related burn. These occur when someone touches something extremely hot, and the skin is damaged. The degree or severity of the burn will often depend on the temper of the object a person burns themselves on.

Radiation burns are the next type, and the most common of these is a sunburn. The longer a person is exposed, the more severe the burn, sometimes resulting in 2nd or 3rd-degree burns.

Lastly, there are electrical burns, which occur when a person comes in contact with direct electricity. These can be quite severe and even wind up causing neurological damage.

ER Treatment for Burns

If you suffer a severe burn, it's time to find an emergency room near you, such as your local emergency room in Lake Jackson.

We can treat minor burns at an ER if you don't have the supplies at home. They will typically clean the wound, apply a bandage, and suggest keeping it cool and taking over-the-counter pain medication.

A more severe second-degree burn may require stronger medication and possibly a skin graft to restore the damage.

3rd-degree burns are the most serious and can cause nerve damage. These burns often require skin grafts and surgery to repair the deep tissue damage and restore function.
